About my Experience as a Certified Professional Doula
As soon as I found out what a doula was I wanted to learn everything I could about pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. I attended my first Doula training in January 2015, I shadowed my first birth as a Doula in April 2015, and by the end of my first year I had supported 25 families AND I had my own baby! Over the years I have taken many pregnancy, birth, and postpartum related classes. My favorite part about that birth is that it is never the same and there is always something new to learn. I could do this work for 50 years and support hundreds of birthing families and there will always be an opportunity to learn and grow.
During the summer of 2019 I completed training to become a Certified Professional Doula Instructor for Allo Doula Academy. I have had the honor of teaching new Doulas and watching them grow through an amazing 15 week training program.
Mentorship is more than supporting a new Doula in their journey, it is my way of giving back to the birth community. By sharing my experience and knowledge I can help Doulas navigate the unknowns so they can focus more energy into themselves and their clients as they go through the process of setting up a successful Doula business.
Below is a list of additional training and experience I have gained over my Doula career.

Why do I want to mentor Doulas?
After taking my first Doula training in January 2015 I was excited and eager to start my Doula journey. I had learned a ton over the 2-day training and my brain was exploding with all of this new information. As soon as I got home I pulled out my laptop and quickly realized there was still SO much I didn't know. How do I find people that want a Doula? How do I create a website? What questions do I ask during a client interview? What are tax write offs for small businesses? Will clients hire me if I have very little birth experience? How much do I charge for my services??? I could write pages of questions that were going through my head.
After that first week went by I was feeling discouraged. I got online and Googled "Doulas near me", I looked over several websites listed and came across one Doula that stood out to me. I kept her website up in my browser for a couple of days and by the third day I couldn't get it out of my head so I sent this Doula an email. In my email I told her that I was a new Doula and that I came across her website and she stood out to me. I let her know that I was eager to learn everything about being a successful Doula and asked if she would be open to meeting with me and possibly mentoring me. I held my breath and crossed my fingers as I pressed the send button.
A few days went by and I received an email back! Long story short, we met for coffee on a crazy snowy day, clicked immediately, she mentored me through my first year of being a Doula, I took a short break to have a baby and when I came back from maternity leave she asked me to partner with her and we ran a successful partnership for nearly 3 years, she retired from Doula work and I have continued to be thankful for the experience and knowledge she has shared with me along the years.
And yes, we still stay in touch! It is because of the amazing experience I had through my early years of being a Doula that I want to be able to give that back to other Doulas starting their journey.
