Back-up Doulas
Calling in a back-up doula is the LAST thing any doula wants to do, but in reality it is eventually going to happen to all of us.
-KNOCK ON WOOD- I haven't needed to call one of my back-ups yet BUT I have backed-up for other doulas several times.
After my experiences backing-up other doulas in my community I realized that IF I ever needed to call a back-up for one of my clients WHO would I call? It can't be any doula. I need to KNOW that my clients are being properly supported in all of the ways we previously discussed and planned. I need to know that this doula is going to care for and support my clients exactly how I would.
There are a list of things I took into consideration when (very carefully) picking my back-up doulas.

A few examples of when I might need to use one of my back-up doulas:
- Family Emergency
- Illness/Sickness- I always give my clients a heads up if I am sick and I give them the choice of if they are OK with me coming or if they would prefer I send my back-up doula. I always practice proper and frequent hand washing and I have no problem wearing a face mask if needed.
- Another Client is in labor- I only book 1-3 clients per month in hopes of avoiding this situation but some babies come early and some come late. No matter where due dates fall there is always a chance that two might go into labor at the same time or very close to each other.
